Glenn Close '74

Glenn Close graduated with a BA in drama and anthropology at The College of William and Mary in Virginia in 1974, whereupon she started a brilliant career that has spanned film, television and the stage.

Best know for her roles as the psychotic nanny opposite Michael Douglas in the thriller Fatal Attraction or perhaps her Oscar-nominated performance in 1988's Dangerous Liasons, Close has performed in a wide variety of characters -- making it seemingly impossible for Hollywood to peg her into a specific type of role.

Close has been nominated for Academy Awards her work in film and Emmy Awards for her roles on the small screen, for most recently made audiences jump on the FX cop drama The Shield.

But she is not a live-action actor alone. Close has lent her voice to many productions such as Disney's Tarzan and for the soundtracks of the classic children's stories: The Emperor and the Nightingale and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Those latter two performances garnered her Grammy Award consideration. And she has also performed with Placido Domingo on a Christmas album, and claims to have sung the National Anthem at the New York Mets' Shea Stadium a record eight times!

Close served the Alumni Association in 2004 as the New York Auction's honorary co-chair, along with fellow alumnus Jon Stewart '84.

"It always amazes me to think that every house on every street is full of so many stories; so many triumphs and tragedies, and all we see are yards and driveways," says Close and echoing Shakespeare, that the world is, indeed, a stage. But for Glenn Close, perhaps it is better said that the world is her stage, and we are all in the audience.
