Alan Williams '92

Alan Williams '92 entered his fifth season with the Indianapolis Colts coaching a defensive secondary that was often criticized. By the end of the year, Williams' staff helped secure a Super Bowl championship for the 2006 season. Not too shabby.

Williams joined Indianapolis from Tampa Bay, where he served in 2001 as a defensive assistant. Williams has developed young players during his tenure with the team. In 2005, Williams oversaw a productive unit that performed well and contributed to the club's defensive maturation. The unit performed to the best level of any defensive backfield in the club's Indianapolis era. The secondary helped the defense surrender only 247 points, the lowest 16-game seasonal total in franchise history. The defensive backs produced nine of the club's 18 interceptions, and the interception total exceeded the number of touchdown passes allowed (17), a first for the club since 1992.

In 2004, six different defensive backs were among the eleven Colts to produce interceptions. With Williams' direction, the defensive backs helped the club amass a +19 turnover ratio, the best in the team's Indianapolis era.

Williams served with Tampa Bay in 2001. He helped tutor a secondary that intercepted 28 passes as the club earned a playoff berth.

At the College, Williams was standout running back and he coached running backs in 1996-97 and defensive backs in 1998-2000 at his alma mater. Williams helped guide running back Alvin Porch '98 to consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons (a school first) and two all-conference awards, including first-team honors in 1996. Williams later tutored three defensive backs to all-conference recognition.

Williams joined William and Mary from Norview High School, where he worked from 1992-95 as assistant head coach for running backs and defensive backs. In addition to his football duties, he also served as the head track and field coach for three seasons.

Williams graduated from William and Mary in 1992 after gaining 2,559 yards total offense (1,220 rushing and 1,331 receiving) from 1988-91. In 1991, he led the team in receptions (57 receptions for 598 yards) and was second in rushing (104 attempts for 439 yards gained). Williams owns the school's single-game post-season record with four touchdowns (three rushing and one receiving) against Massachusetts in the Division 1-AA playoffs. -- Source: The Indianapolis Colts, WMAA
